Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira Review: A Whimsical Ride

Aby Mathew (Fahadh Faasil) is a man whose life derails in public. Jilted at the altar in front of his entire community, he retreats into a haze of confusion and wounded pride. The social humiliation is layered - not just romantic rejection, but a failure of masculine expectation. Enter Nidhi Sudheesh (Kalyani Priyadarshan), a reserved woman who carries her own invisible burdens. Their paths cross when she needs help, and what begins as a transactional encounter evolves into something more tender. As they tentatively heal each other’s wounds, Aby’s ex-fiancée Revathi (Revathi Pillai) reappears, armed with new understanding about the dreams Aby once confided in her. The narrative slowly unspools a hidden truth - something Aby has been avoiding - that ultimately allows him to find the peace that eluded him at the altar.

Althaf Salim’s direction shows a confident visual sense in the film’s quieter stretches. The cinematography captures the humid, lived-in textures of village life in central Kerala, and there’s a deliberate rhythm to the way scenes breathe - long takes, unhurried glances, silences that speak louder than dialogue. This is a film that trusts its actors, and for the most part, that trust is rewarded.

Fahadh Faasil anchors the film with a performance that operates in miniature. Aby is not a man of grand gestures; his heartbreak registers in the slump of his shoulders, the way he stares past people, the small, broken laugh he gives when nothing else makes sense. It’s a reminder of why Faasil remains the most compelling actor of his generation in Malayalam cinema. Kalyani Priyadarshan matches him beat for beat. Nidhi could have been a mere plot device - the healing woman - but Priyadarshan gives her a guarded interiority. You believe her reticence, and when she finally lets her guard down, the film earns its emotional release.

Revathi Pillai’s Revathi is a more difficult role. She is the ex who returns with insight, and the screenplay asks her to be both an obstacle and a catalyst. Pillai handles the contradiction with grace, but the character remains undercooked. The hidden truth that forms the climax is not as surprising as the film seems to believe, and the narrative takes a scenic route to arrive there.

The film’s major flaw is its length. At over two and a half hours, “Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira” mistakes digression for depth. There are entire subplots - involving Vinay Forrt’s Siby and Dhyan Sreenivasan’s Itty John Varghese - that provide comic relief but stall momentum. The comedy works in isolation; the actors are talented, and the banter has a natural, unforced quality. But tonal whiplash between broad humor and somber drama becomes exhausting in the second hour. The film needs a tighter edit, perhaps by twenty or thirty minutes, to let its emotional core breathe without distraction.
