Detective Ujjwalan Review: A Captivating Mystery

In the placid village of Plaachikkaavu, local detective Ujjwalan (Dhyan Sreenivasan) enjoys a reputation for unravelling petty crimes with folksy charm. His life takes a dark turn when a series of baffling incidents - a missing heirloom, a cryptic note, a suspicious death - lure him into a deadly contest of intellect. The antagonist, code-named “the Architect,” seems always one step ahead, forcing Ujjwalan to question his methods, his allies, and even his own sanity. Along the way, he crosses paths with C.I. Shambu Mahadev (Siju Wilson), a hardened officer who distrusts amateur detectives; the enigmatic Korea Kurian (Ameen); and a cast of village eccentrics that include Anthikkurudan (Nihal Nizam), Kunchacko (Nibraz Noushad), Boban (Shahubas), Narayanankutty (Kottayam Nazeer), and SI Sachin (Rony David Raj). The plot twists repeatedly, but the destination is less satisfying than the journey.

Indraneel GK’s directorial debut has a clear affection for the detective genre’s tropes - the armchair deduction, the red herrings, the dramatic unmasking. The opening act is the film’s strongest: careful pacing, crisp Kerala backdrops, and a score that hums with restrained menace. Dhyan Sreenivasan plays Ujjwalan with a low-key earnestness that feels authentic. He’s not a Sherlock-style genius; he’s a man who notices details because he cares about his neighbours. That decency is refreshing.

The trouble begins when the plot demands complexity. The middle portion meanders through a maze of subplots - a rivalry with C.I. Shambu, a personal vendetta involving Korea Kurian, a flashback that tries too hard to be profound. Siju Wilson is effective as the skeptical officer, but his character arc is rushed. Ameen’s Korea Kurian is an intriguing presence, but his screen time is trimmed to a point of near-invisibility. The supporting cast, including Nihal Nizam’s comic relief, isn't used nearly enough to flesh out the village’s texture.

The film’s biggest weakness is its climax. The reveal of the “Architect” feels arbitrary, built on information withheld from the audience rather than skillfully planted clues. The final confrontation, meant to be a battle of wits, devolves into hurried action and exposition. The runtime of 124 minutes drags in the second hour, with several scenes that could have been cut without losing narrative coherence.

Technically, the movie is solid. The cinematography captures the juxtaposition of serene village life and underlying dread. The background score by (uncredited) is effective but occasionally overpowers dialogue. Editing could have been sharper - the narrative leaps in logic are not helped by choppy transitions. The dialogues, primarily in Malayalam, contain some sharp one-liners, but the translation of the film’s title - “Detective Ujjwalan” - doesn’t carry a direct meaning; “Ujjwalan” suggests “one who enlightens,” fitting his character’s role as a truth-seeker.

The TMDb rating of 5.7/10 reflects a consensus that the film has potential but falls short. It’s not a bad movie - it’s a flawed one. For discerning fans of the mystery genre, there are moments of genuine delight. But for general audiences, the convoluted narrative may test patience.
